to starts an X server you can do a "startx" from the command line, if you want the desktop environnement to be runned by default at boot time, then do a "update-rc.d gdm defaults".

the last way to do it is to start the desktop environnement with "/etc/init.d/gdm start"

but why would you need a gui on a server ?

Patience is a virtue. You are not supposed to reply to your own thread unless you have not received a response for more than 24 hours. Doing so just removes your thread from the zero reply list which may decrease its exposure since the forum won't automatically bump it.

As far as I know, Ubuntu server does not come with a GUI, so you need to install one on your own. You can use aptitude to install ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop etc.
