Yea....may be u r rite.....if the requirement is just to check if a port is open, you can use the port no. along with the domain name or IP. But it will try to send http request to that port, even if wget is made to connect to a non-http port.
Anyway I think graziano1968, can use this to check the availability of a remote port.
[root@localhost ~]# wget linux-web.com:25
Right...which is what I said twice before. And spell out your words.
Try ncat on centos. I believe that may be it's name. nmap and nc/ncat/netcat are your alternatives. If none of those are available and you're job requires you to check ports then you need to tell whoever uninstalled all of those useful tools to let you do your job.
