you can pass telinit 3 from grub not sure if in RH but in slackware you can edit your /etc/initab
Quote:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:

@anil98433: Normally RHEL boots into runlevel 3 or 5. There are 2 places you can influence this behaviour: From grub, by adding single or 1 to the kernel line or from /etc/inittab

If both are correct and the system still boots into runlevel 1 then something is probably wrong. Is there any information in the log files? Have a look in /var/log. Specifically dmesg and messages.

level 5 is the GUI
and xorg needs to be installed
most servers do not have x installed nor even want it installed

you do NOT need a gui on a headless server ( no monitor so no need for a desktop environment )

if you really MUST add Gnome2 to a server
see the rather old rhel5 install docs
https://access.redhat.com/site/docum...erprise_Linux/
but if there is no monitor physically attached to this server gnome will be of very little use .

for the current older RHEL 5.10 have a look at the output of
Code:
su -
yum grouplist
for a list of software groups
