Strange Behavior 1TB Hard Disk Drive
Good Day,
We recently purchased a 1TB Seagate 7200RPM hard disk. I installed this hard disk on a server and configured NFS server. I have mounted the nfs share on 2 clients and continuously extract information to the nfs share. Whilst extracting the information, the NFS server loses the partition table of the hard disk on hdd . fdisk -l doesn't show any indication of /dev/hdd1. However when i reboot the server the partition table for hdd (1TB drive) re-appears. The server is using Gentoo with kernel 2.6.25.1. The processor is Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz. This is the error messages, that i have observed from the NFS server. May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr ide: failed opcode was: unknown May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr hdd: no DRQ after issuing MULTWRITE_EXT May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr ide1: reset: master: error (0x00?) May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171791 May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171799 May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171807 May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171815 May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171823 May 26 16:40:05 ftp-svr end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 171831 and it goes on through all the sectors of the hard disk. Could this be a defective hard disk or am I overlooking something? Your opinion is much appreciated |
Sorry to tell you but the hard disk is wrong.
I have heard about that few Seagate 1TB or above has got problem under Linux or Windows does not matter. The Seagate or the company should change it to a good one. It is a firmware problem or something related. Anyway this link is about that problem: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01...ailure_plague/ This is "horrible" as you can see I'm a Seagate fan. Laz |
I guess i will have to go for Western Digital then.
Thanks for the info |

I've heard the same thing about WD. A lot of the bigger drives have been a hit or miss. Good thing is that Seagate will replace your drive for free.
