starting gnome sles 11

Hello,

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I installed sles on a vm, and cannot get gnome to start. I modified the configuration file and set gdm as the default desktop manager but still it is not starting, only in txt mode.

when I try startx, it complains that it cannot find any dispaly.

Do you have a quick howto, because I was not able to find something online, maybe I am blind

Thanks a lot!

Cheers!

to start with
SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 Service pack 3
is NON FREE

you HAVE TO BUY $$$ the required support contract
for the SERVER ( SELS ) edition that is $349 per year
https://www.suse.com/products/server/how-to-buy/
servers are NORMALLY headless

there is NO Gnome desktop installed

for gnome
BUY!!!!!!! SUSE Enterprise Linux Desktop
https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/

or

install the FREE
OpenSUSE 13.2
http://software.opensuse.org/developer/

KDE is default
unless you REALLY WANT Gnome3

you can choose that at the time of install

thing is that I have a licence key

gnome installed from official repository and rpm says it's there, ready for me

Actually why I wanted the yast2 miscellaneous extra option for creating a repository intranet server to test linuxrc nfs/http installation. and from termianl it does not have it there although is the default config and it should be there ..

Maybe you know how to start this Yast2 -> miscellaneous -> create repo server. I honestly couldn't find so much information on the net.

Thanks for the reply.

Check first if /etc/inittab is setup properly, that means to be on runlevel 5. Make sure you have some login manager installed, usually if the installation is correctly, then gdm should be installed.

You can always start Gnome or Xorg using 'startx' command from the command line. See if that works.

startx is not used
use "gdm" instead
you might want to register with novell / Atachmatte
and read the documentation

-- this is a SERVER install so ---

for a TEXT BOOT and TEXT login
-- then a gui ---
login as a normal user in the text boot
and type in
Code:
gdm
