ssl extension missing from php.ini?

I am trying to enable ssl for php and everything I read states that I need to uncomment ;extension=php_openssl.dll. But since I'm not running on Windows, I don't have dlls and that line doesn't exist in my php.ini. I would have thought there'd be some equivalent for linux, but ssl doesn't appear anywhere in my php.ini file. I do have openssl installed and I thought that's all I'd need.

What I'm really trying to do is use php to automatically send an email through gmail, which needs ssl enabled in php. Anyone know what I may be missing?

You can run:
Code:
php -i|grep ssl
to see if php supports ssl

Yes, openssl is installed. I just don't get why the option isn't there in the php.ini file.

You don't need it, as openssl support is built-in php.
