Software RAID for RHEL5 servers

We have configured software based RAID5 with LVM on our RHEL5 servers. Please let us know if its good to configure software RAID on live environment servers. What can be the disadvantages of software RAID against hardware RAID

1) Booting or Rebooting after a failed disk can be a bit more challenging if using software-based RAID. You really need to read all the documentation.

2) There's almost no performance trade-off when considering hardware versus software RAID.

3) Hardware raid == If the controller dies, you better have backups.

4) Live Environment Servers? You mean they DONT have any RAID right now??

(Just kidding, but seriously, if you're talking about 'converting' live environment servers into using software-based RAID...you better have backups. Just nuke the servers, reload the O.S., and restore /etc & your application/data filesystems from the tapes.)

@AlucardZero
How funny! We both have links to ESR's article in our signatures!!!
