I’m having a problem with my Fedora 8 box. Pardon my questions...I'm still learning...

I’m experimenting with software raid level 2 (mirror).

I have two partitions:

/dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb3

(I realize that I shouldn’t use the same device...this is just a test build.)


Here are the steps that I executed:

1. create the 2 partitions
2. use mdadm:
# mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 –level=mirror –raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb3

3. After the partitions are synced, create the file system:

# mkfs.ext3 /dev/md0


4. Add the following line to /etc/fstab:

/dev/md0 /share3 ext3 defaults 1 2


Everything seems to work except that I can’t survive a reboot :-(


For some reason /dev/md0 gets wiped out causing fsck.ext3 to respond during reboot:

Fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/md0


Now my box won’t reboot at all and drops me to a system recovery mode!


Specifically,

1. any suggestions on the software raid steps?

2. how can I edit the /etc/fstab to remove the “/dev/md0” line? The recovery mode will not let me write to the file system!

Its the partition type. I did the same thing way back when I set up my first raid as well :-)

t

fd
t
3
fd
w
q

Its the fact that the type is probably set to 82, which is Linux, and not fd, which is Linux raid autodetect.

btw, rockin' format to your question, it was all there :-)

One point of note is that mirroring is raid-level 1, stripping 0, byte level parity is 5, n-2 is 6... blah blah blah.
