Question Setup VPS un managed hosting using CentOS 6

Hello
I am newbie to Linux
I've rented an un managed VPS
I've goggled and found most review go towards sing CentOS for the VPS.
The VPS is un managed and install CentOS 6 with just one click then generate a root password.
Then use PUTTY or SSH Secure Shell to connect to the VPS and then it is fully empty and nothing installed at it at all.
So please advise how to go into this long way down ahead?
How to figure it out to secure the VPS and add my websites?

Thanks
Mohamed

Thanks for fast reply. Makes sense and pretty fair enough. I am following the guides here:
http://articles.slicehost.com/2010/5...5-setup-part-1
But always keep getting command not found.
So does the CentOS 5.5 is different from CentOS 6?
Also is this is the right place to start with?

if you receive "command not found" it's possible that the application isn't in your PATH or the application isn't installed on your system.
to install a software on centos your can use the command yum. or by downloading some rpm packages and install it.

More than likely you havent exported the paths. Both distros are similar and use same commands.

To correct the bad command issue your having:

go to your home directory then
Quote:
nano .bash_profile
make sure these two commands are there, if not just add whats missing.

Quote:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin
