Easy:
1. Choose and install a Linux system (Ubuntu 10 or Fedora 14, for example)
2. Choose some specific things you'd like to install (Wordpress, along with Apache2, PHP and MySQL might be a good start. Throw in mySql admin for good measure
). This is all easily done from the command line (sudo apt-get install xyz, for example) or from your distro's package manager GUI.
3. Try it out. Post back with any specific questions or problems you might encounter.
4. Rinse and repeat with as much other stuff as you'd like to try out or experiment with.
5. *Any* "service" (like Apache2, for example) can remain active as long the box is running. Regardless of whether you're logged in or not.
