setting up and starting Apache2 to work offline

I'm used to windows and have worked with Apache server on widows and am used to operating it using wamp along with myadmin: so would like to go down the same route only on my linux system. At this time I would like to have some interaction and then resort more to the manual later. Im a bit out of my depth here but have tried ruby on rails with windows and also tried ruby on rails in my linux system a while back. right now I am endevouring to try wordpress and have downloaded the latest version ready to use it once I get Apache2 started; right here on my netbook using easypeasy as the platform.

I would like to start with the setups and then progress to starting the Apache2 server after the setup has been done and also some advice on setting up and using myadmin would be appreciated. As I have mentioned I need to set it up to run offline as I am wanting to learn wordpress as the first task so need to stack working in that regard: Apache, PHP, MySQL using myadmin (in an offline mode). I have used bash a little and also Like to use SciTE as my test editor of choice.

Thanks for any input you can give me

Easy:

1. Choose and install a Linux system (Ubuntu 10 or Fedora 14, for example)

2. Choose some specific things you'd like to install (Wordpress, along with Apache2, PHP and MySQL might be a good start. Throw in mySql admin for good measure ). This is all easily done from the command line (sudo apt-get install xyz, for example) or from your distro's package manager GUI.

3. Try it out. Post back with any specific questions or problems you might encounter.

4. Rinse and repeat with as much other stuff as you'd like to try out or experiment with.

5. *Any* "service" (like Apache2, for example) can remain active as long the box is running. Regardless of whether you're logged in or not.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

PS:
Here are "how'to's for Apache2 and PHP myAdmin for Ubuntu:

thanks for your input and enthusiasm

I thought that it would be easy to understand what I needed by what I had written when starting this thread.

I will try again: I need to know how I alter any config files and where i find them too alter them.

that is config files for myadmin MySQL and any others as well as the Apache2 config file I guess...

through using windows I have become used to everything being there where ever the directory tree is situated because I had the option of putting it where I wanted it for wamp; I can see it there graphically inside one folder or anotherr and find the file I need easily. this doesn't seem to be the case with linux. I have installed it on my netbook using easypeasy(ubuntu for laptops and netbooks) it's an eeepc; it is there somewhere but where and how do I get to these files like the congfig files to set Apache2 up and start it to work offline. I do not want to just simply start it as to my understanding any server that is active without a proper firewall is wide open to any knowledgeable hacker.

Its there on my system some where because it has been loaded and can see all the boxes ticked on the application package manager.

It is probably easy for you to use the man pages but I have not found it to be so.

How do I get to the config files?
What do I change/edit in the config files?
How do I then start Apache2 up to work offline and where is the Apache2 www folder so I can drop a raw version of wordpress in there and start working on and developing my site offline and thereby form it into what i want it to be and how I want it to look?

I would like to use SciTE to edit the said files and bash as the terminal and as I go I well be using tomboy to take notes of the howtoo's that you give me. I am a bit out of my depth with vast volumes of manual pages but will no doubt slowly get into using them and just need some input from an actual living person or persons at this point in time.

thanks again for any help anyone can give me on this I really do appreciate your contribution.

still no progress
am a little dissappointed at present but exercising patience
from what i have read from the links provided I need to know how to get the config files mentioned into a text editor which I already knew and tried to ask about in my original question in this post: can somebody please help me. I tried the documentaion and it is taking a long time to find nothing that I need too know.

could somebody please supply the command that I need to use in bash to get the config file for changing the port the that apache2 needs to listen on it says to change the port from 80 to 127.0.0.1:80 I just need the right command to get the SCiTe text editor up with the config file in it. Apologies I am a bit rusty and remember some things but not everything about using the linux system and the bash terminal. I'm thinking it is something like sudo scite etc/apache2/... but don't know exactly what it is. Can somebody please help.

That would be the listen directive and the apache configuration file is /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.
