server stops responding

My server runs Ubuntu Linux 12.04.1, no graphics, text only. At random times it will stop responding altogether. The computer runs but can't be accessed at all, either through the network or the console. Looking at the system logs has been no help. Any suggestions on what I should look for?

Is there network traffic when it's not responding?

Not sure how to determine that. The server is not a public one so other than syncs to the time server or my own access via the web or over the home network I can't imagine why there would be any other network traffic. My scheduled folder and mysql backups proceed normally until the server stops responding but they don't appear to be at fault.

Do you access the server through ssh?
Are you not able to connect it?
Does it give error something like
could not connect through port 22 : no rout to host
or
you are connecting server through another method.
What is the error you are getting?
Have you installed anything on the server recently?
