Server Autentication Doesn't Work!

I have Apache 2.2.1 and I have the .htpasswd file outside the server and the .htaccess in the directory I want to protect and pointing to the .htpasswd file, but when I test it, no screen or error pops up. It takes me straight to the directory.
And when i test cgi it has an internal server error. Can someone help me?

make sure your .htaccess has the following:

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Password Required"
AuthUserFile /www/passwords/password.file

password.file should be the path to your .htpasswd.
There is also another line you need stating which usernames you require
