Serious problem with mail delivery

Hello there

I have a web/smtp server which provides one single webpage for some company. The company has it's own network (with own web services, mail etc) and our server, which we provide them stands somewhere else.

Let's say, the company has following mail server:

smtp.company.com

Our site provides

media.company.com

Our website delivers mails which are issued over some mail form on our website. We can deliver all kinds of mail, but are having trouble delivering to addresses like

user@company.com

I manually checked some SMTP commands:

Connected to smtp.company.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 ESMTP Gateway smtp.company.com (2) to Company ready
HELO media.company.com
250 smtp.company.com
MAIL FROM: www-data@media.company.com
250 2.1.0 Ok
RCPT TO: somekindoftestaddress@company.com
554 5.7.1 <media.company.com>: Helo command rejected: You are not me

What does that mean?

I know, my server is not "them" (as suggested by the error message) and this is fine. But still, the mail shouldn't be discarded.

The host media.company.com IS actually completely outside the IP-range of the rest of company.com. The host media.company.com is not even managed by company's IT department. To make it even funnier, company.com is even outside the country where media.company.com is located.

Anyone a hint where I need to look?

Thanks

raven

It appears that smtp.company.com is doing a check on the domain part of the incoming mail, and deciding that your host is not allowed to be a source for foo@company.com.

The trail leads to the configuration of whatever mail transport agent is running on smtp.company.com. You will need to talk with the folks that manage that system to find out, first of all, whether they are using PostFix, sendmail, or something else. Then you need to have a discussion with them about how to configure that MTA so that it will allow mail that is addressed to the company.com domain to be accepted from your machine.

Good luck.
