I don't know about that error message specifically, however I DID discover that by sending email from my home machine (Apache & PHP) using mail() via my ISP's SMTP server, I could NOT get the SMTP server to send or forward emails to or from a HOTMAIL address. It simply refused to send it.
I think other SMTP servers are like that also, due to the anonymity and proven 'abusability' of hotmail accounts.
Not sure if this addresses your exact issue, but something to keep in mind when trying to send emails via SMTP: avoid hotmail if you can.

The above lines from the sendmail logs do not seem to be suggesting any error. It says the mail has been Sent.

I agree. No errors indicated. It's simply that the mail server doesn't ever send the mail onwards, but rather drops it in the trash.

i agree with the others . . . no errors sending. based on from address, domain, subject -- it may be getting caught in a spam filter. not familiar with hotmail, but is there a "spam" folder for that account??

Yes, I know but for some reason hotmail is not accepting mails send via sendmail.

one thing that most email services do is attempt a reverse DNS lookup on the host sending the message. If the host can't be resolved back to a FQDN, then it will likely be silently dropped as spam.

I've had the same bad luck. I suggest getting a reverse DNS and then also getting a SPF record. MSN postermaster has their own wizard for their SPF/SenderID so that may help you:
