sendmail is JUST an smtp server, nothing more. I don't understand how you are comparing OE and Sendmail, as ones a client adn one is a server, there's really no similarities in what they do any more than a chicken and a CD. if you are talking about a client then clients like thunderbird can have local address books just like OE, from the server side, you might prefer to look at an integrated system like zimbra which is something of an exchange replacement. or just use an ldap directory in it's own right.

Sendmail Limitations

Sendmail is not just an SMTP Server. You can do POP3 as well. Unfortuneatly, I believe your address book will be stored only on your email clients - not like Exchange server with Outlook where you have the user accounts centralized on the server.

I hate to say this, but I think if this is your desired functionality, you may want to consider moving to Exchange Server for robust email functionality.

erm, sorry, sendmail IS just an SMTP server... Pop3 would be via imap/pop3 services like dovecot, wu-imap, courier-imap or cyrus-imap.

And as above, there are a number of exchange-like services. These are just wrappers around the basic projects, e.g. Zimbra is Postfix for SMTP, OpenLDAP for ldap, dovecot (i think) for imap / pop3.

Sendmail, Postfix, Qmail, Exim and all the others are just an MTA. Think of them this way, the mailman who delivers your mail drops your mail in your mailbox. POP/IMAP is your legs to go and retrieve your mail. So Sendmail is just an MTA and nothing more or less. You need 3rd party applications for calendar, address books, etc. Exchange has all this rolled into one, but I wouldn't recommend using Exchange. Like acid_kewpie mentioned, there are plenty of other tools available to accomplish what you want.
