Sendmail routes via instead of using external server

I had sendmail working at one point on my Fedora system, but under Fedora 6 I no longer can send emails. I am attempting to send mail from the local machine to external email addresses, using my sbcglobal server (which works from another Windows system).

Problem is, when I use sendmail -v to see what's happening, mail is being delivered to my localhost instead of to the external smtp server:

The first line of the log is: Connecting to [] via relay... (instead of my external SMTP server)

I have the following lines, as before, in my file, and have set up the authinfo database correctly I believe:
define(`SMART_HOST', `')dnl

Probably something simple, but I can't figure out why mail isn't being routed to the sbcglobal server instead of

THANKS in advance

cd /etc/mail
make restart

That will create a new file for you editing the file alone is not enough as sendmail uses the cf file not the mc file.

yes, I already re-create the .cf file after any change to the .mc, so I don't think that's it.
