samba pdc: force 1 mandatory profile

Hi folks,
I am trying to setup a samba pdc server for my WinXP Network. All systems have XP Pro. I have a working setup right now. I can add new users, and those new users automatically load the Default User Profile that I have placed in the NETLOGON.

From this point, once the user has a profile I can go into their profile with WinSCP and change their ntuser.dat to a ntuser.man, which essentially makes their profile mandatory. (which is what i want)

However, I would have to do this for every new account that is being setup, and whenever I do workstation updates then users will be bugged with update issues since their profiles would still be locked to an older profile.

Now, how would I go about forcing users to receive the same mandatory profile, rather than all having individual mandatory profiles? It would be much better to maintain an updated mandatory profile each time system changes are made, and then upload that updated mandatory profile for all users.

If there is a way to group users to point to a choice of 2 mandatory profiles (1 for staff, 1 for students) that would be valuable as well.

Thanks for any pointers you folks can help me with.

Hi, I ended up using the Default Profile folder on the PDC as my mandatory file for all users. I tweaked my desktop on a workstation until it had all the links, programs, etc, how i wanted them. Then i copied that profile onto the pdc in the Default Profile folder, and changed it to ntuser.man.

Now, whenever a new user logs in, they grab that profile, and on their first login it automatically creates their own mandatory profile. Upon their second login, it is a replica of the master profile, and remains mandatory from that point on. Users still have access to their own "private" folder on the server for storing personal files. This is independent of the mandatory profile.

If i want to make changes to the master profile for everyone, I can update as necessary and copy/replace the newest profile into the Default Profile. To have all existing users use the newest profile, I can delete their profile folders in WINSCP which forces them to fetch the newest mandatory profile again. The only snag is they have to do the initial login/logout that 1 time whenever a change is made to the master profile.

If specific users require a roaming profile, you can go into that specific user's profile folder and rename their ntuser.man back to a ntuser.dat, which allows them to use it as a roaming profile.

It might be unorthodox, but it works very well, and is quite simple to do.

ps: as a cool bonus i also set the default wallpaper as a bitmap with specific filename (eg. "defback.bmp" that is stored on a shared folder on the pdc. Then anytime you want to update a new wallpaper for everyone, you can just replace with a new wallpaper using the exact same filename.... and presto.... all users now load that new wallpaper automatically without any changes to profiles. Works great for seasonal changes in a school setting to keep things fresh.
