Now days iam stuck with a strange error from windows 7 clients .Not able to access smb shares from windows 7.Samba service is configured in RHEL 4 os.The same share can be accessible using netbios name from xp os.using name and ip address pinging is happening from both sides.

From windows 7 clients if i do \\<Smb server name> iam getting an error report which i attached with this.

from server i cheked the log file and i got some information wich iam pasting here:-

before going any further ahead I would like to know

Have you tried accessing the samba share with IP instead of hostname from win 7?
have you made an entry of this hostname in the hosts file of windows 7?
and I am sure win 7 is in network with linux?

Yes i have tried by ip address and iam able to access the samba share.

have you made an entry of this hostname in the hosts file of windows 7?

No i didn't added any entry in host file because all windows pc's pc's are member of a DC also linux server information is there in DC.FQDN and netbios name communication is happening from both server and client side.
Only the problem is share is not accessible using name.Do you want me to edit host file ? is it require ?

I am sure win 7 is in network with linux?

both server and clients are in same network.

If it is working with IP then I think you should give a try
Code:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
make an entry of IP and hostname at the bottom of the hosts file
Code:
192.168.x.x is01lx01

Few things you need to check
Code:
#iptables -L
(Post the output)

#cat /etc/hosts
(Post the output)

#cat /etc/sysconfig/network
(Post the output)

#cat /etc/samba/smb.conf
(Post the output)

#service smb status
(Post the output)
Code:
what is the output when you ping through hostname from win 7
and kindly use code to show the outputs as it makes easier to study everything.

There is no iptable configured in the server. The following are the things which you asked.

[root@is01lx01 ~]# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
[root@is01lx01 ~]#

[root@is01lx01 ~]# cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the

# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

one more thing these window's PC's are member of a domain called ITTIAM.COM. if i logged in to local computer(this computer) iam able to browse using name.but if i logged in to domain iam unable to browse using name.

Iam suspecting like this is related to some domain related issue. Now my linux server working as a stand-alone server.Do i need to change this role?

In your hosts file
Code:
#vi /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomainname
#172.20.32.15 is01lx01.ittiam.com is01lx01
#172.20.32.1 is01dc01.ittiam.com is01dc01
#172.20.32.17 is01ex02.ittiam.com is01ex02
why have you commented all the hostname?
I guess you should remove those comments so that your machine can help you with name to IP resolution

it should be something like this
Code:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ------>check out this line as well
172.20.32.15 is01lx01.ittiam.com is01lx01
172.20.32.1 is01dc01.ittiam.com is01dc01
172.20.32.17 is01ex02.ittiam.com is01ex02
on windows
Code:
edit hosts file
(at the bottom)
172.20.32.15 is01lx01.ittiam.com is01lx01
172.20.32.1 is01dc01.ittiam.com is01dc01
172.20.32.17 is01ex02.ittiam.com is01ex02
