Good luck. Samba is one of the more advanced linux apps to configure. It literally has hundreds of options.

Your best bet is to find a howto doc for your distribution of choice. IMHO there aren't any good ones that both teach you AND configure it for you. I have read several books on the topic, and still consider myself a rookie. Another good source of info are the two books provided by www.samba.org. The samba3-howto book and the samba3-byexample book. Both are free and available online. Both are huge :) Lots of reading...
