I don't know if there's a simple way to do this. It seems like I'm doing a little too much but I more or less want a solution consolidated to one box and I'm looking for thoughts. I've got a rsync script running as a cron job on a linux box that's mounting a windows share, mounting a NAS, and then rsync from the windows share to the NAS. It's part of a cron job that's rsyncing an ftp, mail, and home directory on that linux box as well to the same NAS.

I just want feedback whether the windows to linux to NAS is kinda silly or not. I guess ultimately if it works for me but I just wanted to know any thoughts. I have a gigabit network so there's no "speed" issues and the backup is happening at late nights anyway.

I think that i have seen somewhere in a shopping site a product that could mount different shares (both windows and UNIX/LINUX). It was a small box (like a switch), but had a web interface to set it up.

What you are doing does not sound too stupid to me, and as you said, if it works then why not.

If you have enough boxes, then it is not really being a problem.


I realise that this probably isn't possible, but why dont you change all to LINUX. A lot of people now are (as Vista is crap)

Oh don't get me wrong. I champion open source EVERYTHING as much as I can. The loom of Vista is no big deal to me since I was one of the many beta testers some time ago. Unfortunately, I have a few XP Pro OEM licenses I paid for many years before I came to know Linux. I have 2 out of 7 machines in my house running those XP license. Both of those machines boot more than one OS and most of the time is spent in some version of Linux. The only reason for booting XP is strictly tivotogo transfers and DVD editing.

I was just toying with rsync scripts and cron jobs pondering the process. I do spend time more time than not adminning windows environments for those other than myself and that's why the need does arise. Taking an old box they might have laying around collecting dust and converting it into a usable device for various needs using linux is an enjoyable passion for me.

I have to say that i share that passion
