Router problems

I am setting up a box with OpenSUSE10.3.

I have installed the OS and have configured my hardware. No internet connection! What steps should I take to configure my D-link router with my server box?

Thank you for the profound wisdom!

Code:
route
netstat -r
Most ISP's give out dynamic IP addresses, so just set your D-Link router to automatically get its IP address. UNLESS your ISP gave you static settings. IN that case, log in and set that up. That has nothing to do with what OS you are using

You said you were hooking up a server box to the internet? Is the D-Link router a NAT router? By server, do you mean a web server serving the internet? You may need to forward the ports you are offering, such as port 80 for a web server, to your server. Some routers have a web interface. Also check the firewall settings you are using on your web server.

I am using this server to host stuff on the web. I openned the ports in my router.. Should look something like this..

[x] 192.168.0.1 TCP Port: 80

Right?

Also do I have to append any of the ports to my IP address or does that automatically append itself?

I put my IP address as dynamic for the box. I gave it something like.... 192.168.0.111
Then I configured the box to take that IP. Once the box and the router have both IPs the same, the ports opened, what would be missing?

I'm no expert, but do you have a domain name and DNS handled somehow?

When I set up the server box I can set up my IP address, server name, and DNS. I have configured all of that through my operating system. I can take the IP address that I gave to myself through the router as a static IP (routers are usually dynamic). I do not have the DNS registered. I haven't gotten that far yet, because I still haven't gotten any internet connection at all.

Hi,

Some basic tests:

ifconfig Is there an ipaddres?
netstat -rn Do you have a default gateway?
cat /etc/resolv.conf Do you have a dns-server?

ping your local ipaddress
ping your router's ipaddress
ping www.google.com

Depending on the results you should be able to determine what is working and what is not
