"route" command usage.

Hello Friends,

Iam trying to understand the "route" command usage in the Linux environment.

Till now my interpretation of the route command is like below.

"To reach a network for example called X.X.X.X (destination) you need will to go through specific gateway .. and netmask is relevant to that destination ip , and metric for priority and , iface to use which interface device " is this correct understanding..?

And what improper argument may arise different type of error cases.

I have observed in one of the target board (broadband router , where it works as a mini linux system and gives the user to configure the routing feature) it gives me error message when iam trying to add a destination ip with a speicific gateway , it throws an error saying that "Default Route cannot be set while the Default Gateway is 0.0.0.0."

Here my whole intention is to know about the routing feature how it works and when it does not work.

please guide me with your thoughts on this

thanks for all your suggestions

regards

Well, the error message you describe looks like an answer to an attempt to have two default gateways. But unless you specify the command you use and the routing table you have when issuing it, there's not much to say.
The good routing how-tos that I myself found useful are this one

and this

As stated at the beginning of the first one, though, routing is a huge topic...
