When you say serial number are you referring to a manufacture's identification number such as a Dell service tag?

If its the actual system serial number then dmidecode is your answer:

Code:
sudo /usr/sbin/dmidecode -t 1 | grep -e 'Manufacturer' -e 'Product Name' -e 'Serial Number' | cut -f 2

try just
Code:
 sudo /usr/sbin/dmidecode -t 1
and see what is returned.

On the two I checked it returned fields for Manufacturer, Product Name, Version, Serial Number, UUID, Wake-up Type, SKU Number, Family. Although not all were populated.

Most of the manufacturer's like Dell provide software for retrieving this info from the ROM chip on the motherboard. If you are looking for that type of info you should check the vendor site to see if they provide any software for this.
