RHEL freezes once static IP is set

Hi everyone,

for some strange reason, the moment I set up static IP onto RHEL 4 ES and I press activate, the mouse and well I guess OS itself starts to lag and then comes to a freeze and never gets back again. I would have to hard reboot it....

this is happening even without the ethernet cable plugged in..

has anyone been in this situation before?

thanks in advance

perhaps it's just X freezing and not the whole system, can you try...
1. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to see if you can get a console
2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X.

If you try option 1, login and type ifconfig and make sure you have a lo (loopback) interface.

thanks for the reply,

it seems to be not only X freezing but the whole machine.
i tried doing what you suggested, they both didn't go, no response what so ever
there is a loopback already set up
i wonder if it has anything to do with the drivers..
