This method has saved me loads of times: Burn a live CD running a light-weight linux distro. Puppy Linux is one of the best. From there, you can see all your drives and partitions, windows, linux or otherwise, and can see all your data and copy it somewhere else.

Depends what you want.
You can use a seperate partition for home.
You can use tar to backup your important files and configuration files.
You can use rsync to transfer them to a external drive.
You can use dd
You can clone your drive
You can use gui progs like mondo etc
....

A good start would be
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/1208
http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/
http://linux.about.com/od/softbackup..._Solutions.htm
and off course
http://www.google.be/search?q=linux+...ient=firefox-a

Kind regards
