Removed Citadel and installed Postfix, Postfix acting funny??

Hi, I've just removed the Citadel groupware suite from my server as it taking up too many resources since the server is quite old and slow and runs many other things.

Server is Debian Etc based!

I wanted to install Postfix as I don't like Exim and just needed something for the odd local and network delivery and reciept.

Apt usually is pretty good at handling dependencies and configuration issues, however this time I really don't know what's going on:

is a sample of my mail.log file after trying to send a local mail from root to me <localuser> and as can be seen it's coming up with some really wierd user names; some of which are running services?

It seems like it got them from my old Maildir before using Citadel, I was using Exim.

I really don't know how to get this mess sorted. No matter what I tried to do Postfix won't send a mail to my user account, even if I'm logged in as myself.

I have checked both master and main.cf files and compared them to my main mail server and they are almost identical if not the same.....

Can anyone help me at all???

I would be so greatful!

Mr. C. 10-07-2008 01:16 AM

You know the drill - output from postconf -n please.

kayasaman 10-07-2008 03:57 AM

Sorry Mr C. didn't know that one! Thanks for pointing it out to me :)

Code:

alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
append_dot_mydomain = no
biff = no
config_directory = /etc/postfix
home_mailbox = Maildir/
inet_interfaces = all

billymayday 10-07-2008 04:13 AM

How did you try to send the mail? It looks to me like the contents of the message have been converted to recipients.

kayasaman 10-07-2008 10:36 AM

I used the terminal 'mail' program which usually works; on my other Debian server with the same configuration it works fine??

Code:

#mail -s "test" kayasaman
mail
CC:
<ctrl d>

I seem to now have a new mail folders created in /var/mail:

Code:

OptiplexGX110:/var/mail# ls
kayasaman  mail  Maildir  root  smmsp  user

most of those shouldn't be there as I'm using local Maildirs in $Maildir or ~Maildir say; upon scanning one of the emails this is the output:

Code:

/usr/share/sendmail/sendmail: line 826: /usr/sbin/sendmail-msp: No such file or directory

I changed the master.cf file slightly to make it exactly identical to my other server in the mean time also:

Code:

alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
append_dot_mydomain = no
biff = no
config_directory = /etc/postfix
home_mailbox = Maildir
inet_interfaces = all
mailbox_size_limit = 0
mydestination = gx110.optiplex-networks.com, localhost.optiplex-networks.com, localhost
myhostname = gx110.optiplex-networks.com

relayhost =
smtp_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${queue_directory}/smtp_scache
smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name (Debian/GNU)
smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/ssl-cert-snakeoil.pem
smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key
smtpd_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${queue_directory}/smtpd_scache
smtpd_use_tls = yes

Of course the Home Mailbox declartation should be Maildir/ however I figured since the server was sending mail to Maildir/.*** that Maildir without / would stop that and sure it did, as the above mail shows!

But this is still strange.

billymayday 10-07-2008 03:24 PM

You need a trailing slash after Maildir, so
Code:

home_mailbox = Maildir/
Edit - just say the end of previous post - sorry. It does need the slash though.

It's the "/" that tells Postfix that it's a maildir format rather than mbox.

If you use home_mailbox = Maildir/ and no mail_spool_directory, the Maildirs should be created in the users' home directory (~/Maildir)

kayasaman 10-07-2008 03:35 PM

I know, I realize that but the issues you saw before where due to me having the homedir as Maildir/?

I reverted back to Maildir/ just now; of course my working config has it in it but I'm just blindly testing things I guess since I don't know enough about Postfix to properly trouble shoot :o but still the output of a mail just sent is:

Code:

Return-Path: <>

--4DFD4AE698.1223411370/gx110.optiplex-networks.com--

I'm totally lost as to why Postfix is thinking that each line before the @ is an address!

There must be some file or files somewhere which need editing to set this straight?

I just hope someone can identify what's going on so that we don't do another DNS config marathon hehe........ - uh :(

billymayday 10-07-2008 03:50 PM

kayasaman, I just had a little play sending myself some emails.

My current theory is that you sent an email to root and somehow cc'ed to a mail message as a list of recipients. Can't quite replicate it yet, but the logs fit.

billymayday 10-07-2008 03:55 PM

I was typing as you were.

Can you cut and paste the command you are using to send. What you have doesn't look quite right.

What is in /etc/aliases? Redo "newaliases"

Mr. C. 10-07-2008 03:56 PM

Your postfix installation is botched:

Code:

/usr/share/sendmail/sendmail: line 826: /usr/sbin/sendmail-msp: No such file or directory
The mail command uses sendmail - without a working sendmail, you're going to have trouble.

Why do you have:

Code:

receive_override_options = no_address_mappings
This means virtual address rewriting and other rewriting forms won't occur. You probably want to remove that line.

billymayday 10-07-2008 04:05 PM

Doesn't receive_override_options = no_address_mappings only kill virtual alias mappings?

Mr C., what created the log message "(expanded from <kayasaman>)" do you know? I don't get that in my logs from aliases.

kayasaman 10-07-2008 04:29 PM

Quote:

Your postfix installation is botched:
You can say that again!!!

billymayday the command used to send is as follows:

Code:

#mail -s "test" kayasaman
test
Cc:
ctrl D

Mr C. I don't quite know what that is I can't remember if I got it from online example or if it is part of the Debian Config by default, however since I don't use virtual mailboxes it should be ok I'm guessing.

billymayday, my aliases file:
Code:

mailer-daemon: postmaster
postmaster: root
nobody: root
hostmaster: root
usenet: root
news: root
webmaster: root
www: root
ftp: root
abuse: root
noc: root
security: root
root: kayasaman
logcheck: root
clamav: root
amavis: root

I will try re-installing sendmail, I think I remember that I might have downloaded the source code of sendmail-cf... something like that anyway which might have done this; however having said that Courier doesn't connect to my Maildir either, I don't know if that's tied in with sendmail also??

Mr. C. 10-07-2008 04:32 PM

Oops, correct. no_address_mappings disables: canonical address mapping, virtual alias map expansion, address masquerading, and automatic BCC.

I don't know what caused the garbage alias expansion. Mail was sent to "kayasaman", which alias expanded to "or@gx110.optiplex-networks.com":

Code:

Oct  6 15:45:43 gx110 postfix/local[21221]: DAA45AE605:
  to=<or@gx110.optiplex-networks.com>,
  orig_to=<kayasaman>, relay=local,
  delay=0.22, delays=0.06/0.14/0/0.02, dsn=5.1.1, status=bounced (unknown user: "or")

So one would expect your aliases.db (/etc/aliases.db) is problematic. What happens with:
Code:

postmap -q kayasaman hash:/etc/postfix/aliases
Show the content of /etc/postfix/aliases as well.

Also, did you run newaliases after changing any aliases?

Still, you have troubles with your sendmail binary, so that needs to be resolved as well.

Mr. C. 10-07-2008 04:34 PM

No, don't reinstall Sendmail if you are going to use postfix!

kayasaman 10-07-2008 04:37 PM

hmm just did an apt-get install sendmail; the system tried to install sendmail-mta which is not what I wanted and it completed, however I re-installed Postfix and yes it looks like I have major dependancy issues!! :(

Now all I need to do is figure out how to get apt or dpkg to fix them......
