Redirect not working correctly

I have a simple redirect in my .htaccess:
Code:
RedirectMatch permanent ^/$ http://www.domain.com/data
But when I go to www.domain.com it redirects me to http://domain.com/data/

What happened to the www?

Is your default or main domain configured to be domain.com or www.domain.com? That's usually the case. Is www.domain.com just a server alias? Does it really matter, I try to do away with www in domain names, just a waste of typing 4 extra characters and was only used to denote it's a world wide web site back in the early days, really accomplishes nothing nowadays.
