RedHat5 Colume group "VolGroup01" not found

Hi everyone,

i am trying to virtualize my client's RedHat 5 server; physical to virtual.
i used CloneZilla, to clone the disk. once cloned, i restored it to a virtualbox VM to test; afterwards it will be restored to an ESXi server.

i hit a snag, the VM is not booting. i need some guidance on how to proceed.

i'm getting: Volume group "VolGroup01" not found

unable to access resume device (/dev/volgroup01/logvol01)
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
setuproot: moving /dev failed: no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /proc: no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: no such file or directory
switchroot: mount failed: no such file or directory

Most likely is that the physical disks are being presented in a different manner, for example in Citrix XenServer the disk devices nodes appear as /dev/xvd* instead of /dev/sd*

For a physical server the disk may even be further abstracted, for example if it's a hardware RAID controller with specific device drivers.

So from the limited information you've given, it's impossible to say exactly what the problem is.

Well it booted ok (in the strict sense), but looks your initrd isn't setting things up properly. Simple attempt for a resolution would be to boot a liveCD/rescue system in the vm then chroot into the cloned system. Make sure everything needed is there (especially pv's, vgs, lvs), then rebuild the initrd.

i ran the Boot-repair tool and it created the log below.
hope it helps.
i have also included some screen shots.

Been there.
Copy /etc/modprobe.conf from RH5 running on VmWare and rebuild initrd.
An existing initrd has no modules to see harddisk, therefore a problem.

G1515 01-27-2018 06:21 PM

thanks everyone,
I ended up using the VMware P2V converter, conversion went through and worked fine right away.
