Redhat, Solaris - Host Went down - Need RCA

Hello all,

My server running on RHEL/Solaris went down of its own. I have rebooted the box and now the host is up. Could you please let me know what are all the log files do i need to check to find root cause for this issue.

I have already checked /var/log/messages and sar logs but not of much help.

Thanks
Raj

By "RCA" I'm guessing you probably mean "Root Cause Analysis".

/var/log/messages is definitely the first place to look.

Also check for common hardware issues that cause PCs to spontaneously shut off or reboot. Heat, dust, bad fan, failing CPU and, of course, power outage come immediately to mind.

Make sure you have a good UPS. Open up your case and throughly "blow out" the PC. Make sure all the fans are working. And make sure the PC is in a well ventilated area.

'Hope that helps!

I am having both solaris 10 and RHEL 5 servers. The issue actually occured in RHEL box. Just want to know is there any other log files/place to check why the host went down apart from /var/log/messages, demesg or sar logs ?
Because those files/logs are not much of help in my case?

Any help is much appreciated.
