Read-only file system - ERROR
 

Dear all,

When iam trying to create a directory in my server iam getting the following error
[root@soft4 ~]# mkdir bkup
mkdir: cannot create directory `bkup': Read-only file system

Can any one help me on this

type mount and check the current mount file system, and then check fstab and look if your file system is ro, and if so edit fstab and type mount -a

I followed the above given steps .i had aslo tried to chage the filesystem permission to rw in /proc/mounts readonly error.
can any one help me on this issue

You don't say what version/distro of Linux you're using, or what you did to cause this error. Typically root filesystems are remounted in read-only mode after there's been some sort of problem, or an unclean shutdown. What are the contents of the /etc/fstab file?

You can boot the system from a CD/DVD, and then try to fsck it, and see if there are any errors. From there, you should be able to mount a partition in read-write mode, and edit the fstab file, then reboot.

Distro 5.4 centos
Currently the error is occuring on one of my vps server .Whether the problem is with my server hardware are permission error .

Ok...see the suggestions above. Did you do/try any of them yet??? What were the results??? This seems to be a recurring theme in your threads, where suggestions are ignored, and we have to ask for each and every detail, each time.

No one here can help you if you don't provide details. We can't tell WHAT is wrong, unless we know more about it. Again, has it been reset frequently? Shutdown correctly? Have you looked at the system logs to see if you got any hardware messages? Have you tried to boot it in rescue mode? Look at the /etc/fstab file??
