Re-Installing SLES 10
 

An Embarrassing 'Hello'.

Am a 'newbie' who successfully installed SLES 10 initially, wanted a different partition setup, tried reinstalling from the same CD. Now I've been met with a variety of 'error' messages including error code -3003, 'invalid partition table' and 'No Hard Drives detected'when trying different partitioning schemes. (It ends up that /sda2 won't 'mount'.)

Is there a way to just re-install SLES 10 from 'scatch' as a new, pristine installation? I am installing on a IBM eServer xSeries 226 server. I think I've bitten off far more than I can chew. Worse, there is nothing to fall back on except the four .iso disks I used to install successfully the first time around.

Also, would trying to install a different version of SUSE or even Windows XP 'Pro' (temporarily) do the trick or make things even worse? The last few error messages I've encountered simply state, 'Invalid partition table.'

what you would want to do here while installing is, select the option "custom partition and remove existing partitions".
this would ask suse to make new partitions with default values.

No luck. I ultimately get an error message. It seems there is a problem mounting /dev/sda2 (swap). This last error message reads: Failure occurred during following action:

Mounting /dev/sda2 to /
system error code was -3003
mount -t reiserfs/dev/sda2 mnt:
mount: /dev/sda2 is not a valid block device

Two things I noticed is that when I get to the 'partitioning' screen, something is always highlighted in red, and when I accept whatever partition scheme I've tried it always shows that the 'failure' always has something to do with /dev/sda2 now.

Any ideas? (At least I can access the CD Installation screen.)

Hello.

Thanks for the advice. I had to try deleting partitions twice but it worked. Now on to the daunting task of configuring my modem.

Whew! I thought I had inflicted some serious damage to my hard drive. It's a good thing I've purchased a number of high-quality Linux 'reference' books (Craig Hunt,O'Reilley, etc.) to better educate myself. I'm a floundering 'newbie' whose got to learn how to swim.
