Raid using dd and what else?

Hi!
I'm going to get a dedicated server soon, and it will have 2x80gb hdds
I'm not sure about the partition table, but I think it won't have separate partitions on the first drive.
Since I don't want to repartition the harddrive (and can't do that since its a ded.server) I have the following question:

Is it possible to create 1-1 file with dd on both disks (like the method we use for creating a swap file) which acts like some kind of container, and mount those files as /home or any mounting point and have the files raided? (like normal hd's would)

Since the server will be a heavy loaded mysql I need the hdds to be the fastest possible within this price. (don't tell me to upgrade to better hdd or etc, I cannot afford that, just please let me know if it's possible to make an SW raid for this configuration somehow)

Thanks anyone for your help!

Buy a bigger hard drive with controller..(just kidding, had to say it).

DD is fine for making exact duplicates of data, but if you want a real 'mirror', check out mdadm. These tutorials should help you:

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/...2/05/RAID.html
http://www.linux-tutorial.info/modul...are-RAID-HOWTO

They may give you what you're looking for. Software RAID comes at a price, though, and is slower than a hardware-RAID solution. If speed is REALLY important, run some tests first to see if this'll meet your needs.
