Post RAID Interchange

hi to all ,

i have a server that is running RAID1 on two harddrives with the same size.

every night i remove that hard drive and put in a next one which again have the same size . and the next day i remove the new one and i relace it with the old on , just to keep a day to day back up since i take them home for testing .

My question is . ?

say if i remove the hard drive in the morning , is there a way that RAID to auto sync the new harddrive without me entering the commands ?

i could write a script to do this . but i have been encountering a problem where the harddrive keep changing its name . sometimes /dev/sdc or /dev/sdg and so on ?

now should i use a udev command or please recommend some other alternative.

thank you .

Regards,

MaaS

According to the man page for mdadm
Quote:
--auto-detect
Request that the kernel starts any auto-detected arrays. This
can only work if md is compiled into the kernel — not if it is a
module. Arrays can be auto-detected by the kernel if all the
components are in primary MS-DOS partitions with partition type
FD. In-kernel autodetect is not recommended for new installa-
tions. Using mdadm to detect and assemble arrays — possibly in
an initrd — is substantially more flexible and should be pre-
ferred.
so that's an option.
Personally I wouldn't keep messing with the HW like that. Just stick the 'other' drive in a separate box and use rsync to backup once a day. Note that by default rsync only transfers differences, so the bandwidth shouldn't be an issue.

well thats a good idea , but i dont have a USB ocnnection to the sever its a NAS with multiple harddrives that are used for hotswap .

now say if iam home or my brother wanted the drive . he dose not know linux. should i create multiple udev rules and scripts to auto mount and backup , or is there a better way in Linux to do so ?
Note: iam using OPENFILER as a Distro .

thanks
