Questions On Installing Server Software With Debian: Apache CVSD apt-cacher
Hello Everyone!
If this is the wrong topic thread, please let me know.
I have been trying to expand my horizons and learn some new things, especially around the server side of life. What I have found is that there are TONS of old HowTo's floating around but most of them are so far out of date that they don't really work anymore. So I have begun writing down the steps I have found to make things work. The problems are that I want to be able to share the information I gathered but I dont know the best place to submit HowTo's/guides and since I am just learning I do not know if the methods I have found are the best way to do things (eg: not best security practice, have extras, missing steps, ect). I have found this forum to be extremely helpful and I am hoping that I can get some input on good up-to-date guides or input to make these guide better as well as get some suggestions on the best places to submit the final guide.
Since I do 90% of everything within Debian these guides are Debian related. So far I am doing all of this on Debian Etch (testing) within a Virtual Machine (so I can restore state when I screw things up :-D )
I have 3 guides in a semi-complete state and several others in various states.
The ones I have mostly complete (eg: things work for the most part) are:
-Partial Debian Repository with apt-cacher (Do not have the secure Apache guide yet and this part requires Apache. I also do not know if this is the best way to set up a partial mirror. I would eventually like to expand it out to other partial mirrors as well like ubuntu and Debian stable ect.).
-A CVS server using cvsd (Works with Eclipse but I don't have too much knowledge about anything else. I have heard that I should use ssh authentication instead of pserver but I have not figured that out yet.)
-Zabbix Monitoring (Was working like 3 weeks ago but doesn't work now with the latest updates in the Debian repository; I do not know why it broke yet).
The ones I am still learning and pulling together are:
- Mail Server (Still on my ToDo List)
- DNS authentication against a MS network (Have yet to be successful :-/ )
- Secure Apache Install (many guides but I have not had time to review all of them and find a good one)
- IPTables/Firewall (Thinking of scraping this one as Smoothwall was very straight forward and documented very well. However, for those not wanting to setup a Smoothwall machine or would rather set one up on their Debian box it may still be useful.)
- MYSQL (More like I want to learn MYSQL and have just been documenting the stuff I have been messing with).
- VPN (Went through a guide I found from 2005 but have not had a chance to figure out what went wrong and why it is not working)
- PXE booting multiple OS's (Sounds like fun; have not had a chance to look into it).
So here are my questions to the LinuxQuestions community:
Are there any good websites that allow for user collaboration on HowTo's to keep them updated and working?
Are there guides you recommend I look at before posting my guides? (I have been through many guides so far, but I will gladly look through more if needed as I am sure others have done a better job and I just have not found those guides yet).
Should I just start a few posts with each of the guides and let members update and help improve them?
Thanks for any input you may have.
