Question about Postfix message size limit

Hi,
what is the difference between message_size_limit and virtual_mailbox_limit?
Thank you

message_size_limit is for an individual message, while virtual_mailbox_limit is for an entire mailbox (something like the sum of the sizes of its individual messages). "virtual" makes the limit apply only to virtual mailboxes. you can read about the different types of addresses here. the relevant parts of the postconf(5) man page are here and here.

Hi Berhanie,

I've default value for virtual_mailbox_limit (51200000 byte).
So, how it is possible that I've user that is receiving message (and his Maildir is over 300 MB)?
Of course I'm using virtual user.

Good question. I suppose it's because you're using a delivery agent which is outside the postfix system. Google shows similar questions, and the answer lies outside of postfix.

Hi Berhanie,
thank you for your suggestion!
That's strange, I'm using Postfix + Dovecot, the latter only for pop3/imap.

It's not so strange if you set "virtual_transport = dovecot". By doing that you're telling postfix to hand the mail to an external program for delivery. Postfix will not access the mailboxes in that case, and so will not be able to enforce limits.
