Purpose of SOA serial number?


Except faster reading of zone records there is not other purpose of correct SOA number,right?(in case when SOA number is totally wrong)

The SOA serial number helps a slave server decide if a zone needs to be transfered from the master. Thus helping master and slave stay in sync.

Just wanna add. By chance after updating the zone file, if someone forget to update the serial number the transfer wont happen until the expiry of zone.
