Hi All,

I have two hard disk server on which we have Fedora Core4. On one hard disk space become full and when i observe with "df -h" it gives me the following details.

/dev/md3 28G 27G 0 100% /
/dev/md0 251M 18M 221M 8% /boot
/dev/shm 1014M 0 1014M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/md2 99G 4.5G 89G 5% /opt
/dev/md1 99G 65G 29G 70% /var


If you observe on this machine it says 100% use for /dev/md3 "/"
and when i check there it is empty.

Could anybody please give me some solution how to free up this disk space, and another point i would like to know is when it shows 100% usage whether it refers both hard disks or single.

Urgent help needed, because my team struck with this problem and unable to continue with their work.

You don't seem to understand the basic hierarchy of UNIX/Linux filesystems.

/ = the root directory.
It can NOT be empty and have your system actually running.

It is the top level directory of filesystems on a UNIX/Linux system. If you notice your other filesystems, /opt, /boot, and /var all start with "/" because the root directory is their parent directory.

Under each of those you could have other directories.

/dev/md3 is the "device" on which the root filesystem exists not the root directory itself. Perhaps you were looking at that thinking it was empty?

To see what is in the root directory type "ls -l /" and hit return.

I would strongly urge you to consult or hire a qualified system administrator before deleting any files because your question indicates you don't really understand Linux. You might delete critical files and there is no way to go through all the ones you need to save.

Some of the files you PROBABLY can delete would be in /tmp and /var/tmp. Doing ls -l of those directories will show you the files that are in them.
