The fsck finished earlier than I thought and I've now been able to mount the three VGs and access the files I want - brilliant!

Although the server still doesn't start as too many files seem to be corrupted. That's fine, I'll just reinstall it now that I've got the important files backuped properly.

Your help was crucial and very appreciated. Should you ever pass Cork in Ireland I must buy you a pint !

Cool

A bit belated but .... a bit of PXE on a mobile platform to try different LVM versions off of different distros in case one doesn't work and LVM Recovery in situations like this can go a long way. Bits and pieces from these posts may move you along further if bogged down with a similar problem in the future...
