Smile Problem in taking backup on tape drive using tar cvf /dev/nst0 * .

We have RHEL4 loaded on the server and our tape drive is not working. While taking the backup on the tape using the command tar cvf /dev/nst0 * the system is creating a tar file by the name of nst0 in /dev directory and no backup is being taken on the tape .Please provide solution.

Thanking You

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.
I assume that the drive has worked previously.

What is the make/model of tape drive?
If it is SCSI drive make sure the controller is recognizing the device.
Look at the output of the dmesg command and verify that it is being recognized by the OS.
Does /dev/st0 exist?
