Postgres - location on Redhat/Centos

Hi,
I'm currently working on setting up a Postgres environment.
When you run the default PostgreSQL packages, you typically have the installation living in /var/lib/pgsql/9.x, and for a small system that works fine.

But what are the recommendations for large scale production systems? Currently I'm contemplating going for something like

$PG_DATA: /opt/postgres/9.x
Archivelogs /opt/var/postgres/archive
backups: /opt/var/postgres/backups

Each filesystem will be allocated on a separate disk volume for increased reliability and redundancy.

I haven't found any clear recommendations for large scale PostgreSQL installations in production environments.

Anyone with recommendations or feedback they would like to share?

You should consider creating a separate partition for PostgreSQL in that case.

Yes, that was the idea.
PG_DATA, archive logs and backups will be located on separate disks. Separate partitions will not be sufficient, if those are located on the same physical disks.
Does this layout seem as a valid option?
