postfix is trying too hard

hello there all,
i am using postfix on ubuntu as an mta.
our company sends pages and text messages to our clients about the status of their machines. So, we know that if a message does not get through, the telecom company is not up or whatever, and we do not want the message put into a deferred queue to go out later.

is there a way i can tell postfix not to try so many times to dispatch a particular message ( really all messages ).

i don't mind if it retries once or twice, but it is really trying too hard to get a message out, and by the time it would, the message would be too old to be useful

thanks for any tips
