PHP5 will not display errors to the browser in Ubuntu

I'm at my wits end. I have a personal apache server with php5 module in it that I have set to host user directories Host/~username. When I introduce any errors to the php file, such as echo "Syntax error; , I get a blank white screen. The error exists in the apache log file in /var/log.

I have found the php.ini file in and found every occurance of "error" in it and set it to "On" or E_ALL depending on what the argument wants. I still get a white screen.

What the hell is going on?

Thanks.

Check in phpinfo() function if "display_errors" is enabled.

Ive used apachectl graceful after every change as well as clearing browser cache after every test.

Ill check phpinfo when I get back home.

This was the problem. In the php.ini file, the top has several settings, but the real setting to turn it on is much lower in the file. Opening in a graphical editor and Ctrl-F found it.

Thanks a bunch! I now may claim my sanity again.
