Permission denied after backup via admin area of my shop

Hi all,
I have a permissions problem after backing up my website. Lateley when I back my database up via the admin panel and then try to back up the files via ssh I get the following error message:

QUOTE
tar: XXXXX/admin/backups/db_osrunXXX-2008011307XXX.sql: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I use putty to log into my Debian server and the use the tar -cf command to back up the entire directory. Usually this works fine, I have been doing this for months. But now I only get that error message.
I tried restarting the Server and restarting the apache (apache2ctl restart) but nothing helps.
I would really appreciate any ideas...

My system:
Linux 2.6.9-023stab046.2-smp
MySQL 4.1.13
Apache/2.0.54 (Linux/SUSE)

What are the permissions and ownerships of all the directories starting from /root to way down to the backups directory which has the SQL dump ?

What is the exact command and your username you're using to create the backup using tar ?

Thank you for your input but I found a way to circumvent this on my own.
Desperation made me just delete the database dump in question and make a new one. That solved the problem alltogether...
