Openldap uidNumbers and uid fields

I'm thinking of setting up an openldap server to use for remote authentication on some fileservers, ssh server, etc.

My question is about the uidNumber when setting up an ldap user. Every tutorial I've read either specifies a uidNumber, or only specifies a uid but not uidNumber. To me, the uidNumber is one of the most important fields.

- Are uidNumber fields required?
- Are uid fields required?
- If they are required, and you don't specify them when creating a user, are they automatically calculated (incermented)?
- uidNumbers (and uids) Should be unique. If you specify a non unique uid and/or uidNumber, will it complain when you try to insert it into the ldab db?
- If uidNumbers are not required, and you don't specify them for a particular ldap user, does that mean that user cannot use remote authentication to ssh to a server?

maybe the tutorials you read are just making assumptions and not specifying all the items. You should have the uid and the uidNumber for each user
