oom killer vmware server concerns
 

I'm thinking about playing around with vmware server on linux. I've been doing research on running vmware server on linux and I've found serveral users talking about oom killer and how it kills the vm processes. According to the vmware link below in kernal 2.4 oom process killed the process that requested more memory than could be provided. Howerver in kernal 2.6 oom killer will kill the largest active process which is of cource the vm's. I will be using a flavor of cento os I haave downloads of version 4.3 4.4 and 5.0 It seems to be that centos is using the 2.6 kernal. So can someone tell me how I can get around this problem. Also some users were saying they had to install a hugemem kernal in order to fix the problem on 32 bit boxes 64 bit users did not seem to have problems. One of my big reasons for wanting to learn more about vms on linux is the abilty to do lvm snapshots and rsync.

Why don´t you install vmware on your linux box and try to run a virtual machine on it, before you think of killing any? I have vmware running on my debian box without any problems, and without need to kill any vm.

Don't let them run out of memory. Define truckloads of swap in need.
We have had GSX running fine on Centos 4.something. Mind you we had 4 Gig on that box too ...

I can't see what you are planning to use it for should be an issue. Might run like a 3 legged dog, but that's a different problem.
