nslookup -- ls option not implemented

hi there

as a relatively new linux user, I have been having problems with options in nslookup. There is nothing in the man pages, and I have tried searching for answers, but so far to no avail...

I am finding that options such as -ls and even -help are not implemented:

nsloopup
>set type=any
>ls google.com
The 'ls' command is not implemented
>help
The 'help' command is not yet implemented

Another (almost identical post) suggested going to the site: http://incubator.apache.org/ftpserver/ftp_commands.html
for answers, but i have found that the site doesn't exist now.

is this a changable setting? does the 'yet' mean that help can be changed but ls cannot? or is this just due to server restrictions? I tried this on both an external server and on my own isolated machine (no internet) just to try, and got the same result. am I doomed to failure??

If so, are there similar options on dig that would do the same thing?

many thanks

telg

There is no 'ls' command in nslookup. Proper usage of nslookup is like this:

Code:
[twantrd@twantrdlinux ~]$ nslookup
> google.com

Non-authoritative answer:
google.com nameserver = ns2.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns3.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns1.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns4.google.com.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
google.com nameserver = ns3.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns4.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns2.google.com.
google.com nameserver = ns1.google.com.
ns1.google.com internet address = 216.239.32.10
ns2.google.com internet address = 216.239.34.10
ns3.google.com internet address = 216.239.36.10
ns4.google.com internet address = 216.239.38.10
If you wanted to search for a particular record:

Code:
[twantrd@twantrdlinux ~]$ nslookup
> set q=MX
> google.com

Non-authoritative answer:
google.com mail exchanger = 10 smtp4.google.com.
google.com mail exchanger = 10 smtp1.google.com.
google.com mail exchanger = 10 smtp2.google.com.
google.com mail exchanger = 10 smtp3.google.com.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
smtp4.google.com internet address = 72.14.215.25
smtp1.google.com internet address = 72.14.203.25
smtp2.google.com internet address = 64.233.167.25
smtp3.google.com internet address = 64.233.183.25

there is a "ls" option in nslookup and is used for zone transfer.
this option lists all the record in the queried domain. thus, basically this feature is disable for security reasons.
