Not Freeing up disk space after deleting files centos 5.6 bit 64
Hi All,
We have 64 bit centos 5.6 mysql server. which disk was completely utilized to 100%. we stoped the mysql server & deleted bin logs, other unwanted logs file & data which were is GBs. After deleting data we use sync command but still disk is showing 100% utilized. so we rebooted the server twice but still its not showing free space. below are some links i tried but didn't solve the issue. ========== http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...eted-files-now http://setaoffice.com/2011/10/31/del...in-filesystem/ ========== Please suggest if any one have solution on it or some one faced this issue before. |
The ext2/3/4 filesystems reserve, by default, 5% of the total space for the root user. When df shows "100%" usage, that really means "100% (or more) of the 95% generally available", so if the disk were really 100% full, you would have to free up at least 6% of the total space in order to see that number drop below 100%.
To get the real picture, you need to run df without the "-h" or "-H" options and look at the numbers in the "1k blocks" and "Used" columns. You should also make sure that the files you are deleting do not have more than one hard link. That link count needs to go to zero in order to release the space. |
You will need to look for processes that still have the deleted files open. A tool like lsof will help as part of that investigation.

@grim76: You might want to note the words, "so we rebooted the server..." in the original post.

Maybe you should check if the inode usage is not 100%, try maybe 'df -i'
