newbie becoming root Ubuntu


have sucessfully install Ubuntu on my system. I need to become root to install packages on the machine. How do I become root. Having a bit of a problem figuring out what my root password is and how to become root. also, how to I open termainal window?

If you don't know how to open a terminal window, you're not ready to become root.

Study on "sudo"

on the other hand... no better learning experience than to break it until re-installing is your only option.
