Hi everyone. I have a small office and am trying to come up with a solution. I'm on a tight budget... =^)
I want to setup 4 workstations that will run Internet Explorer only. Each workstation will have a monitor, a keyboard a mouse and as small a cpu as is possible. The goal is to conserve space. I'd rather not have to use cpu's for the worstations if at all possible. Unfortunately, I have to use IE.
I would like to set it up so that 1 Server distributes IE to the terminals.
Terminals would also need print capability. I need as simple a solution as possible. I currently run Ubuntu on my laptop.
Have you come across the Linux Terminal Server Project? A Windows equivalent (though far more expensive) is Windows Terminal Server - 1 server and many thin clients. You could run IE4Linux on the server and serve it to your thin clients.
I tried IE4 Linux a while back and it left much to be desired. I will definitely look at the Linux Terminal Server Project. Will this allow me to serve up IE to the thin clients? I have to use IE... there is no getting around it. It sucks, but that's the hand that I've been dealt.
About the thin clients....
1. Can I set up clients without HDD's?
2. Do I even need cpu's at all?
3. What about storing IE in ram somehow?
http://www.omni-ts.com/linux-desktop/ - this may be of use to you. I haven't used the system much myself, I checked it out at a LinuxWorld Expo where they were using it in the internet cafe. I'm told it's easy to set up and use. Have another look at ie4linux - is there a particular version you need?
