Hello there. I have a WD MyBook 3TB USB drive with 1TB of data on it ( in NTFS format )already. I need to plug it into a Linux server and get to that data. The articles I have read state that I will have to reformat the drive thus losing all of the data. Is there some other way to use this drive and get to my data ?

On your linux server, you need to install ntfs-3g in order to access NTFS partitions. What distro are you using?

I have already installed the ntfs driver. Now, when I do an fdisk -l and try to mount I get :

How exactly are you trying to mount the device?

That looks fine. Just mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 mountpoint

EG

mkdir /mnt/external
mount /dev/sdb1 -t ntfs-3g /mnt/external
